SE5a, Maj. Keith Logan Caldwell, RAF No 74Sqn, Clairmarais, France, September 1918 Already celebrated as a brave and tenacious pilot, New Zealander Keith Caldwell would surpass his own high standards of incredible airmanship when his fighter was involved in a mid-air collision in September 1918. With his aircraft damaged and spinning earthwards, Caldwell climbed out to stand on the wing of the fighter, where he attempted to pull the wing and strut closer together. At the same time, he kept his other foot on the rudder peddle and attempted to bring the aircraft under some control. Miraculously, the aircraft started to respond, but continued dropping at an alarming rate, however, it was now something of a controlled fall. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to affect a controlled crash landing, Caldwell brought the stricken fighter in low over Allied lines, jumping clear of the aircraft just seconds before it struck the ground and disintegrated. Allied troops watching on could hardly believe what they had witnessed, and later recounted how as the SE5a smashed into the ground, Caldwell picked himself up, dusted himself down and calmly strolled towards Allied positions. For most men, having survived such an incident, they would have taken this opportunity to use their rank and take a desk job for the rest of the war, but that wasn’t Keith Caldwell’s style. He was straight back to his squadron and back flying operational patrols, once he’d been checked out by station doctors.

Stationed at RAF Brüggen as part of the 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force, four squadrons of Jaguars maintained a constant state of readiness, housed in newly constructed hardened aircraft shelters designed to withstand the opening salvos of any potential conflict. Each squadron occupied its own dedicated area with nine shelters, each capable of protecting two aircraft. These pilots trained relentlessly in both nuclear and conventional weapons delivery, knowing they stood on the front line between peace and war in Europe. Jaguar XX963 earned an infamous place in aviation history on 25th May 1982, during the height of the Falklands War. During a routine training sortie, the aircraft was intercepted by an RAF Phantom that was, unusually, carrying live munitions. What should have been a simulated radar engagement turned catastrophic when the Phantom pilot pressed what he believed was the button to register the kill. Instead, a Sidewinder missile launched from its rail, striking the Jaguar and tearing it apart mid-air. The quick-thinking pilot managed to eject safely before the aircraft disintegrated, scattering wreckage across a German field 50 miles from Brüggen. This tragic accident remains one of the most unusual friendly fire incidents in RAF history, a stark reminder of the razor-thin margins between training and real combat during the Cold War era.

With its nose rising imperiously into the air, the impressive stature of the Stirling was a result of the massive, lengthened undercarriage the aircraft employed, a design modification needed to give the Stirling a greater angle of attack during take-off. The Stirling’s huge bomb bay allowed the aircraft to carry three times as many bombs as the Vickers Wellington and almost nine times the weight carried by a Bristol Blenheim, presenting the RAF with a potent new weapon with which to take the war to the enemy and pointing the way towards the future of night bombing operations. Stirling Mk.III LJ542 was unusual in that it sported rather elaborate nose artwork, a feature which was nothing like as prevalent on British aircraft during WWII but was in this case particularly impressive. Named ‘The Gremlin Teaser’, the artwork featured a pin-up girl wearing what appear to be strap-on angel wings, the inference thought to be that this angelic figure was flying in defiance of evil, in this age-old wartime struggle of good against evil, something its crew must have felt they were doing on a nightly basis. ‘The Gremlin Teaser’ would end up being a veteran of 60 operational sorties and during her time with No.199 Squadron, was involved in undertaking vital electronic countermeasures missions, particularly around the time of D-Day, confusing enemy defences in advance of the Allied invasion.

When the Sea King became operational with the US Navy in June 1961, it was the largest amphibious rotorcraft in the world, and the first all-weather helicopter to reach production status for the US Navy. A capable and adaptable aircraft, it didn’t take long before the Sea King started to take on tasks other than the anti-submarine role it was intended for. During the Vietnam War, several US Navy Sea Kings were adapted to operate as armed search and rescue helicopters in the Gulf of Tonkin during ‘Operation Rolling Thunder’, coming to the aid of downed airmen either at sea or land. These were dangerous, secretive missions because they were operating in forward combat positions. US Navy HS-2 ‘Golden Falcons’ Sea Kings performed at least ten overland and five rescues of downed US airmen in North Vietnam during 1967, actions which were both intrepid and selfless. The aircraft modelled here was the subject of a rare colour picture taken on the landing pad of USS Mahan in the Gulf of Tonkin in May 1967. Underlining the hazardous nature of these missions, the aircraft was lost at sea, claiming all souls, just two weeks later. This release allows us to pay tribute to these clandestine and dangerous Sea King rescue missions during the Vietnam War.

This 1:48 scale die-cast model release of the World War One Sopwith Camel plane replicates the beautiful livery of an early aviation ace. This Aviation Archive model features a rotating propeller and display stand. We’ve only made 900 of these limited-edition Walter Hinchcliff Sopwith Camel F.1 die-cast models. History Liverpudlian Walter ‘Hinch’ Hinchliffe began his military career with a British Army artillery unit, but in 1916, joined the Royal Naval Air Service. After training, he was posted to Cranwell as an instructor, where he clocked up an impressive 1,250 flight hours in 13 months of flying. In January 1918, he joined No.10 Squadron. RNAS at Téteghem near Dunkirk, and scored his first victory in a Sopwith Camel on 3rd February 1918. As the commander of ‘C’ Flight, Hinchliffe’s Sopwith Camel B7190 was one of the most distinctively presented aircraft of the squadron, with its blue and white detailing making it an attractive sight for Allied and Luftstreitkräfte pilots alike. He used this aircraft to score his second and third victories in France, ending the war with six confirmed victories, confirming him as an ace pilot. The spine of his aircraft carried a representation of the Liverpool coat of arms, and the wheel covers had little devils painted on them. The wording ‘Donner Wetter’ painted on either side of the fuselage is German for ‘thunderstorm’ – fitting for a pilot who enjoyed such a meteoric rise through service. After the war, ‘Hinch’ was persuaded to fly a wealthy heiress across the Atlantic, as she wanted to become the first woman to do so. Tragically, both aircraft and passengers were lost without trace during the attempt.
