60512 Steady Aim entered traffic on 24 August 1946 at Gateshead, moving on to Heaton shed on 8th September. On 14 December 1952 Steady Aim was allocated along with three other A2/3s to York shed where, among other duties, it was used on passenger services between Hull and Leeds. The Diagram 118 boiler was fitted to 60512 Steady Aim during a Doncaster Works visit in October/November 1957 and the locomotive finished its days in Scotland, having been allocated to St. Margaret's shed on 2 December 1962 and being withdrawn from service while at Dundee, on 14 June 1965.

60523 Sun Castle entered traffic at Kings Cross on 2 August 1947, spending less than a year on top line services before being allocated to Leeds' Copley Hill shed on 30 May 1948. The first phase of building British Railways' Mark 1 catering vehicles followed the traditional pattern of dining that had been catered for since Edwardian times, with large Kitchen Cars preparing multiple course dining for consumption in both First and Third Class Dining Cars. Three prototype catering vehicles were built by Eastleigh to basic requirements set out by the Hotels and Catering Services Department of British Railways, with each stage of construction incorporating feedback from restaurant car staff- these being M1546 Kitchen-Buffet (RKB), W1900 Unclassed Restaurant (RU) and E1700 Buffet-Restaurant (RB). The RB kept the same kitchen, staff area and seating type as the other two vehicles, but by sacrificing ten seats, the pantry was extended, and a new service counter was introduced for the serving of light refreshments. Propane gas units were introduced for gas cooking. This meant reducing the reliance on electric power which allowed for a smaller dynamo and battery. Access to the water tanks was also improved, along with door access for the catering staff; the single 24Ó doors being replaced with a 'door and a third' arrangement that offered a second 9Ó wide door alongside the main door. The prototypes were a success and 128 vehicles were ordered, built in four lots between 1960 and 1962 by Pressed Steel and Birmingham RC&W. But in a change from the prototype, some of the window sizes were altered and the serving area was rotated through 90 degrees to become longitudinal. By 1977, British Rail had come to realise that the existing Mk.1 catering stock would have to be retained for a longer period on long haul services than originally anticipated, especially as the APT and HST programs were behind schedule. The catering fleet was suffering as vehicle availability decreased and services increased, leading to a lack of morale among catering staff and an increase in public dissatisfaction with on-train catering. In 1960, 850 catering vehicles covered 794 daily booked services but by 1977 this had dropped to 460 vehicles covering over a thousand daily services. Following a high profile public opinion survey, BR realised that catering needed to become part of the corporate InterCity image and an accelerated program of refurbishment ensued. The onboard equipment and interior layout needed to be standardised to ensure that spares were readily available to keep the vehicles in services and that serving patterns were consistent across the fleet to improve working conditions for staff. The resulting fleet refurbishment of all catering vehicles was based on alterations to the diagram 24 vehicles and was grouped under diagram 33 RB(R). Doors were installed between bars, pantries and kitchens which allowed for manning by fewer staff and interiors were improved by raising illumination levels through fluorescent lighting and removing bulkheads, using brighter colours and having 'wipe-clean' surfaces and seating. With no Mk.2 catering cars being built from new, Mk.1 restaurants and buffet vehicles were included in Mk.3 rakes on the major main lines until the Mk.3 catering coaches became available. Certain services continued to use them into the early 1990s; The Clansman and the Holyhead trains had RBRs in 1990/1991 and Norwich services still had them in 1993 according to the coaching stock book. Once the Mk.2f RFBs were fully in service, especially on Intercity cross country services, there was no further need for Mk.1 stock and the vehicles were relegated to charter stock.

Caledonian Sleeper, Mk3 Sleeper Coach, 10580 - Era 11

In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe. Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk breaks and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline (WCML) for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers as well as a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988. In 1979 British Rail ordered 236 Mk3a sleeper carriages to replace an ageing fleet of Mark 1 sleeper cars built to various designs and which dated from the late 1950s to early 1960s. This order was later reduced to 207 carriages. Mk3 sleeper vehicles remain in use on the Great Western Railway's Night Riviera from London Paddington to Penzance in Cornwall having had their interiors refurbished. East coast sleeper services between London and Scotland ceased in May 1988, but the sleeper services on the WCML from Euston remined. Responsibility for operation of the remaining Anglo-Scottish services passed within British Rail from InterCity West Coast to ScotRail in March 1995. The Caledonian Sleeper franchise was initially handed out as part of the ScotRail franchise which was won by National Express who took over the services operation in 1997. National Express continued to use BR's Mk3 sleeper coaches, hiring locomotives from Virgin Trains until March 1998 and EWS from then on. Mk2 seated carriages were added to the service in 2000 featuring first class-style reclining seats, whilst the Mk3 sleeping cars were refurbished. In 2004 the ScotRail Franchise including the Caledonian Sleeper was transferred to FirstGroup with the Caledonian sleeper rolling stock being repainted in FirstGroup's corporate blue, pink and white livery. In 2014 the Caledonian Sleeper became part of a separate franchise awarded to Serco who invested £100 million in new Mark 5 carriages which were introduced in April 2019, replacing the aging Mk3 stock.

Cappagh, Class 60, Co-Co, 60028 - Era 11

Built between 1989 and 1993, 100 BR Class 60 locomotives were built by Brush Traction in Loughborough. After teething troubles, the first two locomotives entered service in October 1990. After privatisation, the whole fleet transferred to EWS ownership, which was acquired by DB Schenker, a wholly owned subsidiary of the German railway company, in June 2007. 4 Locomotives, 60028, 60029, 60046 and 60055 were sold by DB Cargo UK to DCRail in 2019 with the 'Super Sixty' upgrade. 60028 was turned out in a blue livery, with large CAPPAGH logo. Under BR No. 60028 was named 'John Flamsteed' after the first Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed who made the first observations of Uranus (although he mistakenly catalogued it as a star) and laid the foundation stone for the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
