History
When the English Electric Canberra entered Royal Air Force service in spring 1951, it was unquestionably the world's most advanced jet-powered bomber. Though it missed service in Korea, the conflict accelerated its production significantly, with the jet designated 'Super priority' status.
The Suez Crisis of 1956 finally gave RAF Canberra units the opportunity to demonstrate their offensive capabilities. Five Canberra squadrons were deployed against Egyptian forces, with No.139 Squadron's jets from Binbrook assigned to RAF Nicosia for crucial target-marking missions. These aircraft would illuminate targets using Target Indicator incendiaries and 1000lb bombs for the bomber waves following from Malta.
On 3rd November 1956, Wing Commander Paul Mallorie led No.139 Squadron against the Egyptian airfield at Luxor, targeting Soviet-made Il-28 'Beagle' bombers. After marking the targets, Mallorie made a bold decision. With smoke obscuring the site and daylight fading, he led his squadron in an audacious dive bombing attack against the parked Egyptian bombers to devastating effect. The Operation Musketeer Canberras of RAF No.139 Squadron remain among the most distinctive aircraft involved in this significant chapter of British military history.
