History
Tracing its lineage to the formation of the Royal Flying Corps at Farnborough in May 1912, No.II(AC) Squadron holds the distinction of being both the most senior squadron in the Royal Air Force and the world's first fixed-wing aircraft unit. Known as 'Shiny Two', the squadron became the first British unit to cross the Channel at the start of the Great War, developing expertise in aerial reconnaissance and Army cooperation that would define its role throughout decades of service.
The squadron's impressive 27-year association with the Panavia Tornado began in 1988, operating the type through some of the final chapters of the Cold War. During this period, the most visually striking aircraft were those adorned with temporary winter camouflage for Arctic operations in Norway. The Tornado GR.1A represented a dedicated reconnaissance platform, comprising 16 converted GR.1 airframes and 14 newly constructed aircraft.
